Choosing a host for Minecraft

  • Single-thread CPU speed matters far more than core count. Minecraft's main tick loop is largely single-threaded, so a high-clock consumer CPU usually beats a many-core server chip.
  • Ask what happens when you exceed your RAM allocation — some hosts kill the server, some swap it to disk and it becomes unplayable.
  • If you run a modpack, check the host installs it for you and how quickly they add new pack versions.

A vanilla server for up to 10 friends is comfortable on 2–4 GB. Modded profiles change that completely: a large modpack wants 6–10 GB, and a kitchen-sink pack with 300+ mods can want more.

Usually yes on paper, and often not in practice. A VPS gives you more raw resource per pound, but you own the updates, the firewall, the backups and the 2am restart. Managed game hosting is worth the premium unless you actually want to be a sysadmin.
